World Ocean Day

World Ocean Day has been celebrated unofficially since it was proposed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Last year the United Nations took it to the next level by designating June 8th, 2009 as the first official celebration of the event.

June 8th, 2009 is the first official celebration of World Ocean Day

This June 8th join thousands of concerned world citizens and show your appreciation for our oceans by celebrating Seas the Day.

preserve our oceans

Much the same as Earth Day is an occasion for all to reflect on how we can preserve our natural resources and do all we can to save our planet from ourselves...

so World Ocean Day presents an opportunity for greater awareness of and appreciation for the ocean’s bounty.

The oceans play a key role in our lives from providing marine life for food, sport, hobby, entertainment and beauty to a means of transportation and world trade.

Earth’s oceans are critical to our way of life and our survival. They…

• purify our drinking water

• affect Earth’s climate

• provide an abundant food source and medicinal resources

• are essential to transportation and traffic of goods

Global warming, carbon dioxide poisoning, over fishing and pollution are greatly affecting the delicate balance of our marine environments depleting the population of many species of marine life.

Happy Feet gives us a clear message

If you have any doubts about this, rent “Happy Feet.” I had never seen it before until recently and I was astounded at the message and deeply touched.

I thought it was just another kids’cartoon movie, but through the eyes of Mumble, the main character, we see in very plain language what our over-consumption and pollution is doing to aquatic life and how humans are disrupting nature’s cycle.

Aquariums, museums, zoos, schools and many other organizations worldwide will celebrate 2009’s “one climate, one ocean, one future” theme through celebrations and community events like beach cleanups, educational programs, art contests, film festivals, and sustainable seafood events. The Ocean Project and World Ocean Network are organizations dedicated to bringing awareness to the public on the deteriorating state of Earth’s oceans.
