Earth Day 2009
Every year since 1970, we have celebrated Earth Day on April 22nd. The annual festival is intended to stir consciousness of and appreciation for the planet's environment.
Started by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, it is now celebrated worldwide.
The celebration of 1970 is said to mark the beginning of the modern environmental movement. Senator Nelson proposed the national event in an attempt to "put the environment into the political 'limelight' once and for all."
Organizations, schools, and communities organize countless festivities to promote and encourage all of us to take a stand for sustainability and take steps to green our world and save the earth.
If you haven’t yet, attend an event, participate, and take action. And make it a year-long habit to protect our environment by living green and reduce, reuse, recycle.

How to Celebrate Earth Day
Attend an event in your area… but if you can’t or there isn’t one near you, try one of these suggestions:
• Plant a tree –trees help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
• Pick up litter—you can organize your own trash collection event with friends and neighbors.
• Buy local—support local growers and farmers especially the organic ones.
• Cook a meal around organic and/or locally produced products. Decorate your table with hand-made recycled items.
• Don’t use disposable plates and cutlery.
• Carry your own reusable drinking bottle, coffee mug, and bags. Recycle plastic bottles, cups, and bags.
• Buy a
carbon footprint offset.
• Reduce, Reuse, Recycle for the day—
declutter your home
, organize your closets, a room, or your whole house.
• Donate unwanted clothes, toys, etc.
• Make it a point to learn about the environment and the challenges we face today. Teach your children.
• Make
eco-friendly crafts
with your kids while teaching them to recycle.
