So, What Is a Carbon Footprint?

impact of our carbon footprint As defined by Wikipedia, a carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gas emissions caused directly and indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product.

Simply put, it is the impact your actions have on the planet.

All organic matter contains carbon dioxicide, CO₂, and it is released and absorbed in a continuous cycle. It has since the beginning of time. The only thing that has changed is the magnitude of our impact on the planet by the enormous amount of CO₂ and other gases we are producing.

Steps To Reduce Carbon Footprint

What Is your Carbon Footprint?
Start by doing your own carbon footprint calculations. This will help to bring home the concept. But whether you know the number or not is not as important as your commitment to changing old habits with new sustainable practices. You can take steps to reduce consumption and increase conservation of our natural resources. You can buy less, recycle more, waste less, and choose green products.

Lower Carbon Footprint

plant a tree
• Plant a tree—trees turn carbon dioxide into oxygen.

• Cut down on your use of paper or use recycled paper.

• Stop using aerosol sprays—use pump sprays instead.

• Buy energy-efficient appliances.

• Walk or ride your bicycle.

• Turn off the lights and other electronic devices when you’re not using them.

• Turn up the thermostat in summer.

• Turn down the heater in winter.

• Buy products with little or no packaging.

• Consume less, waste not.

• Reduce, reuse, recycle.

• Write your Congressman and tell him or her to vote for environmental protection projects.
